Cape Neddick Residence

1,500 sf family room and master suite addition to a 18″ century Maine coastal farmhouse. The client desired the new addition to look like it had always been there. To that end the new addition incorporates the same exterior palette of material as the original house and latter kitchen ell addition. The massing of the new addition took it’s cue from the typical New England farm house with its multiple attached additions, including the barn and other out buildings. The new addition also expresses the duality of formal front and the more informal rear. While the front elevation presents a strict symmetrical face through carefully matched and arranged window and door openings, the rear elevation is more expressive of the internal functional components such as stairs, utility spaces and service entry doors. The new addition is tied to the surrounding open fields and views through a rough hewn wood trellis and stone patio set on the south side of the addition.

The interior finishes further integrate the new and old by using plaster walls, hardwood floors, exposed heavy timber beams, and dark chestnut casework and trim. A large three hearth natural stone fireplace and chimney anchor the new addition and help knit it in with the existing kitchen ell and east patio.
